About Kehewin Cree Nation

Kehewin Cree Nation is a Plains Cree community and Treaty 6 signatory located between Kehewin Lake and Muriel Lake in northeastern Alberta.

Kehewin Cree Nation, known in Cree as kihêw nehiyaw askiy (ᑭᐦᐁᐤ ᓀᐦᐃᔭᐤ ᐊᐢᑭᐩ), is a Plains Cree Nation in northeastern Alberta. The Nation's culture committee records that Kehewin entered into a nation-to-nation sacred agreement at Fort Pitt on September 9, 1876, as a signatory to Treaty 6. Its main reserve sits between Kehewin Lake and Muriel Lake, about 24 km south of Bonnyville and 235 km northeast of Edmonton. The Nation's lands include:

  • Kehewin 123, which the Nation controls
  • Blue Quills, which it owns jointly with other Nations

Culture is at the centre of community life. Each year Treaty Week brings together Treaty education, wholistic wellness, mîkowâhp (tipi) teachings, wahkohtowin (kinship), traditional medicine teachings and other land-based practices, and it ends with the annual powwow. The Cree core values of "Knowing, Being, and Doing" guided the design of the Nation's K–12 school.

In December 2024 the Nation opened a Cree immersion language nest for young children. Its name translates to "bringing our language home." The community is also rebuilding after years of federal intervention in its finances, and that work includes 46 new homes. Kehewin Cree Nation is affiliated with Tribal Chiefs Ventures Inc. and the Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations.
